On World Mental Health Day, 10 October, I had the honour of being part of a meaningful Mental Health Awareness Session at Narmada College of Management, where I interacted with students and faculty members on an issue that is deeply personal to me—mental health and emotional well-being.

As the Founder of Serve Happiness Foundation, I shared my own personal journey of living through chronic depression, facing difficult phases in life, seeking support and gradually finding a new direction filled with purpose, service and hope. For me, sharing this journey is not about talking about the past. It is about reminding someone who may be struggling today: You are not alone. Things can change. There is always hope.

From Depression to a Life of Purpose

There was a time when life felt extremely difficult and uncertain. My journey through depression taught me that mental health struggles can affect anyone, regardless of education, career or achievements. With the right support and guidance, however, it is possible to rebuild.

I experienced the importance of counselling, professional medical support, meditation, yoga, spirituality, connecting with nature and selfless service in my journey towards a more meaningful and balanced life. Eventually, I found a deeper purpose through Serve Happiness Foundation—an opportunity to serve society, connect with young people, work with communities and spread happiness through meaningful action. This journey has taught me that sometimes our greatest struggles can become the foundation for our greatest purpose.

Mental Health Is as Important as Physical Health

Young people today are navigating a rapidly changing world.

Academic pressure. Career uncertainty. Social media. Constant comparison. Expectations from family and society. Fear of failure. All of these can influence our emotional well-being.

We often take care of our physical health by exercising, eating well and visiting a doctor when we are unwell. Our mental health deserves the same attention and care.It is perfectly okay to say:     “I am not okay.”

And it is perfectly okay to ask for help.

A Moment of Stillness Through Meditation 🧘‍♂️

One of the meaningful parts of the session was conducting a short meditation practice with the students and faculty members to help relax the mind and create a moment of inner stillness. In our fast-paced lives, we often spend so much time responding to the outside world that we forget to pause and listen to what is happening within us.

Even a few moments of mindful breathing and silence can help us slow down, become aware of our thoughts and reconnect with ourselves. Meditation may not solve every problem, but learning to pause can help us respond to life’s challenges with greater awareness and calmness.

Creating Safe Spaces to Speak

Through interactive conversations and activities, I encouraged students to express their emotions openly and listen to one another with sensitivity and empathy. Sometimes, what a person needs most is not advice but someone who genuinely listens. We need to create educational institutions, workplaces, families and communities where people feel safe enough to say what they are going through without the fear of being judged.

A simple conversation can sometimes become the first step towards seeking help.

Sometimes, Two Words Can Create Hope

We may never know what someone around us is silently going through.

A friend who appears happy may be struggling inside. A student who seems quiet may be carrying enormous pressure. A colleague who always smiles may simply be trying to hide their pain. That is why compassion matters. Sometimes, a few simple words can make a difference: “I am here for you.” “You can talk to me.” “You don’t have to face this alone.” A little time, a sensitive conversation and a few words of trust can sometimes become a ray of hope in someone’s darkest moment.

To every young person facing challenges in life, my message is simple: Please don’t give up.

Do not hide your struggles. Talk to someone you trust. Seek professional help when you need it. Take care of your mind just as you take care of your body. Spend time in nature. Practice mindfulness or meditation. Stay connected with people who genuinely care about you. And remember—a difficult phase is not the definition of your entire life. Your story can change.

Speak your heart. You don't have to carry every burden alone. Listen with empathy, support with compassion and never underestimate the power of a caring conversation. Together, let us create a world where mental health is spoken about openly and everyone feels heard, valued and supported. — Nitin Tailor
